NSW Councils at a Crossroads

Half of Australian councils are not covering their operating costs. A field workforce shortfall of 300,000 is projected by 2027. Federal grant funding has quietly eroded to a fraction of what it once was. Against this backdrop, senior technology leaders from councils across NSW gathered in Sydney on 27 May 2026 for the Local Government Technology Summit and the conversations were notably different from previous years.

The debate about whether AI belongs in local government is over. What filled the room instead was something more useful and more difficult: how to actually do it well, under pressure, with limited resources and rising community expectations.

We just need the courage to recognise it, and the wisdom to govern it well without drowning in the process.

Data & Design Principles for Placemaking

This thought leadership series explores how data-driven insights are transforming urban planning to create vibrant, community-focused spaces. Through case studies including Sydney's Data After Dark initiative and Melbourne's Royal Park Masterplanning project, it demonstrates how cities leverage locational intelligence, behavioural data, and economic metrics to enhance public spaces while preserving local identity. The series examines the integration of advanced analytics with human-centric design principles, emphasising the importance of community engagement and transparent governance in creating inclusive, resilient urban environments.
