Huawei to launch first 5G-enabled foldable phone
At the World Economic Forum's annual meeting of the New Champions, Huawei confirmed its much-anticipated phone with a foldable screen will also be its first to use 5G. The phone is set to be released sometime in mid-2019.
"The roadmap for our industry on the device side of 5G is to launch the smartphones next year," said Huawei's deputy chairman Ken Hu during a panel discussion on 5G. "At Huawei, we will launch our first 5G smartphones in mid-2019. They will take advantage of 5G networks with faster speed and lower latency."
"In our first 5G smartphone, we are going to introduce a foldable screen. This is the first time to introduce foldable screens on a smartphone," added Hu. "So, let's imagine, with much faster speed – 100 times faster than today – you're going to enjoy an amazing high-definition video experience with a big screen on your smartphone."
Huawei announced earlier this year that it wants to launch the world's first foldable smartphone. This came as a surprise to most analysts who had predicted that Samsung would take the title, though this still may be the case as Samsung is set to unveil the first details about its own product in November.
However, bringing the 5G technology with the foldable screen will make Huawei's an even more competitive product to challenge Samsung's offering.
Earlier this year it was revealed that Huawei had overtaken Apple to become second largest smartphone provider in the globe, and this latest news shows its seriousness in usurping Samsung to take the number one position.
