US smart city expert and former Australian Foreign Minister keynote speakers at conference

Renowned international smart city expert Sergio Fernandez de Cordova and former Australian Foreign Minister Professor the Hon Bob Carr will join this year’s keynote speaker line up at the Australian Smart Communities Conference in Melbourne from 9-11 May.

They’ll be joined by 40 local and international smart city and community leaders presenting at the event as well as delegates from across the country.

Hosted by the Australian Smart Communities Association (ASCA) the conference will feature insights about community engagement, unlocking the power of big data and analytics, focused innovation and research into future smart communities.

ASCA is the not-for-profit peak body representing people and organisations spearheading moves to make our communities more liveable, more sustainable and more technologically empowered. Its members and partners include governments, businesses, universities and passionate individuals. ASCA recognises the importance of putting people first – and viewing things from a local perspective while also drawing on international experience.

“There’s a lot of attention around smart cities thinking right now and ASCA’s annual conference is where the leading practitioners meet. We’ll be developing plans and strategies to improve the quality of life in our cities and communities through the smart use of new technologies,” CEO Laurie Patton said.

“Australia invented Wi-Fi, the Heart Pacemaker and the Black Box Flight recorder, some of the things which have changed our lives, so we certainly have the track record to underpin local smart cities and communities initiatives,” he said.

New York City was named the world's top smart city in 2016, and Sergio Fernandez de Cordova (top right) is one of its brightest lights. Sergio works internationally, shaping smart city policy and programs, and catalysing innovative partnerships and business models. He is a world-leading expert on smart city Public Private Partnerships.

Sergio has more than 20 years of advertising, media, government and legal experience, and has led a variety of private-public partnerships in cities across the United States as well as major global cities.

Guest speaker at the Conference Dinner will be former Foreign Minister Bob Carr (bottom right), who is also the longest continuously serving NSW Premier. As Foreign Minister, Mr Carr fostered stronger relations between Australia and Southeast Asia, campaigned for the passage of a global Arms Trade Treaty and led the final stages of Australia’s successful bid for Australia’s seat on the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.

The 2018 Australian Smart Communities Conference features an impressive program of international and national keynote speakers, panel discussions with leading smart community professionals and a trade exhibition of leading technology businesses and organisations.
